Since UAE Corporate Tax took effect, most businesses have registered and filed at least one return — but registration is not the same as being compliant. Three years in, the mistakes RAS Associates sees most often aren’t about missing the deadline; they’re about what happens in the months between filings.
1. Free zone entities assuming 0% is automatic. Qualifying Free Zone Person status isn’t a default — it depends on meeting substance requirements and earning genuinely “qualifying income.” Businesses that assumed their free zone licence alone guaranteed 0% tax have found themselves reassessed at the standard 9% rate, with penalties for the shortfall. A proper substance and income-classification review, done annually rather than once at setup, is the only way to keep that status defensible.
2. Treating Corporate Tax and VAT as the same compliance exercise. They use different registration numbers, different filing calendars, and different definitions of taxable income. Businesses that hand both to the same generalist bookkeeper, without a clear separation of workstreams, tend to discover errors only when the FTA queries a return — by which point interest has already accrued.
3. Related-party transactions without transfer pricing documentation. Any UAE group with intercompany transactions, management fees, or shared services between related entities now needs contemporaneous transfer pricing documentation, not something built retroactively when a query arrives. This is the single most common gap RAS Associates finds when taking over a new client’s compliance from a previous provider.
4. No connection between tax filings and the actual management accounts. A Corporate Tax return that doesn’t reconcile cleanly to the audited or management financial statements is a red flag to the FTA before they’ve even asked a question. Filings prepared in isolation from the accounting function — a common outcome when compliance is outsourced separately from bookkeeping — create exactly this exposure.
The businesses handling this well share one trait: a single accountable partner overseeing both the numbers and the filings, rather than tax compliance bolted on as an annual, disconnected task. That’s the model RAS Associates builds for clients — Corporate Tax, VAT, and IFRS reporting managed as one connected function, not three separate vendors.
